Manitou - History

Early Innovations

Since the invention of the first all-terrain forklift truck in 1958 by Marcel Braud, innovation has been at the core of Manitou's success. The original machine, created by inverting a farm tractor and adding a lifting mast and hydraulic steering, was named "Manitou," meaning "a truck that handles everything." This name was chosen during a family brainstorming session for its international appeal.

Milestones and Expansion

Manitou launched its first all-terrain truck, the MC 5, in 1958, followed by the MC 18 in 2017. The company expanded internationally with the opening of Manitou UK in 1972. In 1981, Manitou introduced its first telescopic handler, and in 1993, launched aerial work platforms and the first rotary telehandler. The company also entered the truck-mounted forklift market with the MANITRANSIT range in 1995 and established a major International Spare Parts Logistics Center in 2007.

Recent Developments

In 2015, Manitou celebrated its 500,000th machine sold and acquired the Perth-based LiftRite Hire & Sales dealer to strengthen its presence in the mining sector. The company also expanded into emerging markets by acquiring Manitou Equipment India in 2017, adding backhoe loaders and mini-loaders to its product range.
