SRAM - Leading Innovation in Bicycle Components
Founding and Early Innovations
SRAM was founded in 1987 with a groundbreaking product: the Grip Shift (or twist shift) shifter. This innovation revolutionized the road bike market and quickly adapted to mountain biking in 1991, propelling SRAM into rapid growth. The idea for Grip Shift originated from founder Stan Day's dissatisfaction with traditional gear shifting methods. Collaborating with engineer Sam Patterson, Stan developed the twist shifter prototype, which led to the company's debut at the Long Beach bike show in 1988. Despite early challenges, including a misprinted company name, SRAM established itself with Grip Shift and later solidified its presence by developing its first derailleur.
Expansion and Technological Advancements
SRAM's growth accelerated with the introduction of the ESP rear derailleur in 1995, followed by key acquisitions that expanded its expertise and product range. The company acquired Sachs in 1997, RockShox in 2002, Avid in 2004, and Truvativ in 2004, enhancing its capabilities across drivetrain components, suspension, and braking systems. SRAM's innovation continued with the launch of the Force and Rival mechanical 10-speed groupsets in 2006 and the introduction of the DoubleTap shifting technology. The RED groupset, launched in 2007, was particularly notable for its light weight and fast shifting capabilities, and SRAM's acquisition of Zipp and Quarq further expanded its product offerings and technological integration.
Recent Developments and Future Directions
In recent years, SRAM has continued to push boundaries with its advancements in wireless electronic shifting and power measurement. The launch of the SRAM RED eTap groupset in 2015 introduced wireless shifting, and subsequent releases, including the AXS groupset, expanded this technology across road and mountain biking. SRAM's acquisition of PowerTap, Hammerhead, and Velocio in 2021 and 2022 has strengthened its position in cycling technology and apparel, ensuring seamless integration of hardware and software. The company remains committed to innovation, providing cyclists with cutting-edge products and improving their riding experience.
